Request a custom itineraryThere are two routes to north-west Bali: over the ridge at Bedugul, past the crater lakes, or along the north coast road. Journey times below are by car, to the boats for Menjangan Island.
Menjangan means deer. Herds range freely through the national park and the resort grounds.

Boats to Menjangan Island leave from Banyuwedang, on the north-west coast beside West Bali National Park, and some hotels in Pemuteran run fast boats directly from the beach. The drive to the coast takes about four hours from the airport, three and a half hours from Ubud and an hour and a half from Lovina. We can arrange private transfers from each of these.
Menjangan Island is protected as part of West Bali National Park, so accommodation is on the mainland coast opposite. Pemuteran offers the widest choice of beach and dive resorts, while Banyuwedang and Pejarakan are closest to the national park and the boats. Most trips to the island leave in the morning and return by early afternoon.
Dive trips require a certification, and divers should bring their certification card. Snorkelling requires no certification or experience. Introductory dives with an instructor are available for guests without a certification.
April to November is the dry season and has the most settled weather, although Menjangan is sheltered enough to dive all year. Visibility is usually between twenty and thirty metres. January and February bring the heaviest rain, and occasional plankton blooms can reduce visibility for a few days.
Everyone entering the park pays a conservation fee set by the park authority. The fee is included on most of our trips; where it is paid separately, the tour page says so.
Snorkelling and the dolphin trips are suitable for children, and life jackets are provided. The Ijen trek is not recommended for young children: it starts at night, climbs steeply and passes through sulphur fumes, and operators generally accept guests aged twelve and over.
Two nights is enough for Menjangan Island and the national park. Three nights allows time for Lovina or the Biorock reef at Pemuteran. For Ijen, allow a night on the coast before and after the trek, because it starts at night.
Sightings are frequent but cannot be guaranteed. The Bali starling is critically endangered and is found in the wild only on Bali. Birds are most active early in the morning, which is why the birdwatching trip leaves at 06:00.
